Riassunto
Il poema non si apre con Adamo ed Eva, bensì con la cacciata di Satana dal Cielo, scagliato nel Caoscon la sua schiera di angeli ribelli. Qui Satana organizza con il demone Belzebù la sua vendetta contro Dio. I diavoli sono quindi riorganizzati come un vero e proprio esercito, con a capo di ogni armata una delle divinità antiche. Satana fa così erigere la sua nuova roccaforte: un castello, che chiamerà Pandemonio, alle pendici di un vulcano. Stabilitosi a Pandemonio, Satana prepara il suo attacco con l'aiuto di Belzebù, Moloch, Belial e Mammona. Questi demoni gli fanno varie proposte, ma quella di Belzebù, basata su una profezia non ancora verificata, viene ritenuta da Satana la migliore: corrompere il nuovo mondo appena creato da Dio, ovvero la Terra. Satana parte così da solo per scoprire se questo nuovo pianeta esista realmente. Egli attraversa le profondità infernali, alla cui guardia aveva posto lui stesso due creature terribili: Morte e Colpa.
Dal Cielo intanto Dio osserva i suoi movimenti e prevede già la caduta degli uomini, con cui ha popolato la Terra e ai quali ha assegnato quel libero arbitrio che li condurrà al peccato. Toccherà allora a suo Figlio compiere il sacrificio su cui si fonderà la religione cristiana: farsi mortale e morire per la salvezza degli uomini. Una volta arrivato alle porte della Terra, per accedervi Satana deve percorrere le Scale di Giacobbe, che nell'ambiente cristiano fa riferimento ad una scala che collega il cielo con la terra:
« Una scala poggiava sulla terra, mentre la sua cima raggiungeva il cielo; ed ecco, gli angeli di Dio salivano e scendevano su di essa... »
(Gen 28, 12)
Per ingannare il controllo dell'Arcangelo Uriele, Satana si finge un cherubino e si trasforma poi in cormorano per entrare nel Giardino dell'Eden. Qui, dall'Albero della Vita, vede per la prima volta Adamo ed Eva, il primo uomo e la prima donna creati da Dio. Uriele, nel frattempo, si è reso conto dell'inganno e avverte l'Arcangelo Gabriele. Gli angeli entrano nel Paradiso Terrestre e trovano Satana, che, mutato in rospo, cerca di avvicinarsi a Eva, e lo catturano. Gabriele e Satana si stanno per confrontare in battaglia, quando Dio interviene a interrompere la contesa. Satana sfrutta l'occasione per fuggire.
Lo sguardo si sposta quindi sugli uomini primigeni: Eva, svegliatasi, racconta infatti ad Adamo di aver sognato che un angelo le aveva offerto il frutto dell'Albero della Conoscenza.
Dai due si reca l'Arcangelo Raffaele, che li mette in guardia raccontando loro della cacciata di Satana dal Cielo, a causa della ribellione che questi aveva scatenato dopo l'annuncio della generazione del Figlio. Una volta espulso dal Paradiso Satana, Dio aveva infatti assegnato al Figlio il compito di creare un nuovo mondo e una nuova razza, a sua immagine e somiglianza. La parola passa quindi al primo uomo, che racconta il momento del suo risveglio e della profonda solitudine che subito lo aveva colto. Dio, ascoltati i suoi lamenti, aveva allora creato dalla sua stessa carne Eva. Al termine del racconto Raffaele lascia soli Adamo ed Eva.
Dopo sette giorni, mutato in nebbia, Satana torna nell'Eden, dove prende le sembianze di un serpente. Adamo ed Eva sono in quel momento separati, e il serpente ne approfitta per convincere Eva a cogliere il frutto dell'Albero della Conoscenza. Una volta scoperto il peccato, Adamo, che non vuole abbandonare la donna, nonostante sia consapevole del terribile atto che sta per compiere, si nutre a sua volta del frutto proibito. In seguito al loro peccato, l'uomo e la donna scoprono per la prima volta la reciproca attrazione dei corpi ma al tempo stesso provano imbarazzo per la loro nudità. Presi da una grande paura, Adamo ed Eva corrompono l'armonia che li circonda imputando ciascuno all'altro la colpa dell'accaduto. È importante notare che qui, contrariamente a quanto tramandato dalla precedente letteratura cristiana, Adamo ed Eva non sono superiori ai desideri umani, ma hanno preferenze, riflettono su ciò che li circonda e hanno anche una loro sessualità, sebbene non la percepiscano in termini voluttuosi e sensuali. Solo la curiosità umana e terrena di Eva fa sì che Satana possa ingannarla; e terreno è anche il gesto di Adamo, che pecca consapevolmente per stare accanto alla sua donna.
Summary
The poem does not open with Adam and Eve, but with the expulsion of Satan from Heaven, led into Chaos with his crowd of rebel angels. Here Satan organizes his revenge against God with the demon Beelzebub. The devils are therefore reorganized as a real army, with one of the ancient gods at the head of each army. Satan thus has his new stronghold built: a castle, which he will call Pandemonium, on the slopes of a volcano. Having settled in Pandemonium, Satan prepares his attack with the help of Beelzebub, Moloch, Belial and Mammon. These demons make various proposals to him, but Beelzebub's proposal, based on a prophecy not yet verified, is considered by Satan to be the best: "corrupt the new world just created by God, namely the Earth". Satan thus sets off alone to discover whether this new planet really exists. He crosses the infernal depths, guarded by two terrible creatures he himself had placed: Death and Guilt. Meanwhile, from Heaven God observes his movements and already foresees the fall of men, with whom he has populated the Earth and to whom he has assigned that free will that will lead them to sin. It will then be up to his Son to make the sacrifice on which the Christian religion will be based: to become mortal and die for the salvation of men. Once he arrives at the gates of the Earth, to access it Satan must walk along Jacob's Ladders, which in the Christian context refers to a ladder that connects heaven with earth:
« A ladder rested on the earth, while its top reached the sky; and behold, the angels of God ascended and descended upon it..."
(Gen 28, 12)
To deceive the control of the Archangel Uriel, Satan pretends to be a cherub and then transforms into a cormorant to enter the Garden of Eden. Here, from the Tree of Life, he sees Adam and Eve for the first time, the first man and woman created by God.
Uriel, in the meantime, has realized the trickery and warns the Archangel Gabriel. The angels enter the Earthly Paradise and find Satan, who, transformed into a toad, tries to get closer to Eve, and they capture him. Gabriel and Satan are about to face off in battle, when God intervenes to interrupt the dispute. Satan uses the opportunity to escape.
The gaze then shifts to the first men: Eve, having woken up, tells Adam that she had dreamed that an angel had offered her the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.
The Archangel Raphael goes to the two, who warns them by telling them of Satan's expulsion from Heaven, due to the rebellion that he had unleashed after the announcement of the generation of the Son. Once Satan was expelled from Paradise, God had in fact assigned his Son the task of creating a new world and a new race, in his image and likeness. The word then passes to the first man, who recounts the moment of his awakening and the profound loneliness that immediately struck him. God, having heard her cries, had then created Eve from her own flesh. At the end of the story Raphael leaves Adam and Eve alone.
After seven days, transformed into fog, Satan returns to Eden, where he takes the form of a serpent. Adam and Eve are separated at that moment, and the serpent takes advantage of this to convince Eve to pick the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Once the sin has been discovered, Adam, who does not want to abandon the woman, despite being aware of the terrible act he is about to commit, in turn feeds on the forbidden fruit. Following their sin, the man and the woman discover for the first time the mutual attraction of their bodies but at the same time feel embarrassed by their nakedness. Gripped by great fear, Adam and Eve corrupt the harmony that surrounds them by blaming each other for what happened. It is important to note that here, contrary to what was handed down by previous Christian literature, Adam and Eve are not superior to human desires, but have preferences, reflect on what surrounds them and also have their own sexuality, although they do not perceive it in voluptuous and sensual. Only Eve's human and earthly curiosity allows Satan to deceive her; and the gesture of Adam is also earthly, as he consciously sins in order to be close to his woman.
